That'd be cool. Like how we turned in our voices reading the FoI thingy? I still have to turn that in...

If you need any of the earlier submissions, I have them. IM me (Phant019) on AIM or e-mail me.

well, if anyone wants to try to do a voice-over to the promo, go for it, just do it word for word (perferably while watching the promo so it would match). And then just send it to me on AIM (MorpheusNate).

As for the loading part, its not very hard to add XKB of 1800KB or even a progress bar on how far its loading ( % of downloaded frames or by KB, either way is doable ).

And for the blockiness during playback: The following is probably why SWF is blocky and AVI isn't. SWF is dynamic, and therefore renders right before your eyes. Large-image scaling/distortions use a lot of CPU power (check your CPU usage when you play the SWF). AVI is static, it has already been rendered frame by frame so playing back doesn't require so much CPU. If the rendering causes your CPU to max out, it can't render all the frames so it skips a few which would create blockiness.

( SWF is dynamic so users can interact with it -- its not really built for promos. But then again supporting Mac and Windows video at the same time and keeping the quality good while the file-size at a minimum can become a tedious task. )

SWF is also nice in that it is much, much smaller than an equivalent AVI, and it will render at any resolution without losing sharpness. Both of these are advantages even with non-interactive movies.

I was wondering what everyone was talking about with blockiness. If its CPU related then that would explain why I don't have a problem with that. I've got a decent setup with my Athlon 1.2 and 256megs of DDR. Though it's actually too slow for most of the audio rendering I do. (any suggestions as to what to upgrade to for the best performance to price ratio would be nice guys)

Anyway I like the promo. I really like the song used for it. I do think it's a bit lacking in content, but that will change I'm sure. Other than that it's pretty good. There is a somewhat of a cheese factor in that it's a bit overly dramatic, but hey? I'm not complaining. ;)

Thanks Aetrus, I would suggest going to P4 though, just grab a socket 478 board and a chip, and at least 256MB ram. That would take care of any cpu related slowness.

Thanks for the comments, I'll try to get it better content oriented, as soon as our artists can get some great pics up :)

Actually, I have an Athlon XP 1900+, and I do notice the choppiness that everyone else is complaining about. Of course, it depends on the resolution you are running at. If you view the video in a smalle window, it will render faster.

I must also disagree with Morpheus here by suggesting you buy AMD, not Intel. :P The AMD chips are still faster on average (although it depends on what, exactly, you are doing) and they are a bit cheaper.

I've run AMD since I had a 133 and I'll stick with them till I buy a Mac and then relegate them to my secondary computer. I bought my current chip in July of last year at computer show and even though the airflow in my case blows and I have heat issues in the summer I would still recommend AMD chips! (airflow problems have nothing to do with the chip although my gen of Athlon chips does have heat problems) I just keep my case open and it's fine. A boxfan in the summer keeps the chip at under 130 degrees. It had maxed out at 170 degrees. That was not cool. (pardon the pun)

EDIT: I just read somewhere that a temp of over 110 degrees is potentially damaging. I bottom out at 120 usually. I suppose that means I need to rearange some cables, and buy a chassis fan. I don't want to fry my CPU or chipset!

Made sure I had 256 DDR 2100 in it too. Almost ended up with 512, but the dumbass who put my system together used a cheaper brand than I wanted him too, and it was incompatible with what I bought off the guy down the row selling sticks for next to nothing. (samsung instead of micron) I sold my samsung stick to a friend for $30 bucks he was eternally grateful.

Anyway I run flash in a small window so that would be why it's not choppy. I run my desktop at 1024x768x32 (small fonts. I'm slightly farsighted so its actually better that way for me)

but we're off topic... So what does everyone suggest for additions to the promo we have here? :)

It really just depends on what you have had good luck with, I've ahd good luck with Intel, and they do stay cool... I'm just rebuilding an old computer of mine with a P4, and this will decide wether I stick with them of not *crosses his fingers*

If you don't have too much money i'd upgrade the CPU to the very fastest your motherboard supports and maybe add another 256mb or 512mb of ram ( hey its real cheap ). P4s have a nice new instruction set (like mmx and sse, etc) that gives awesome rendering speed of graphics (and audio too i think... but you won't get the added performance of the instruction set unless the program you use has been written to take advantage of it). The prices (speed:price) between AMD and P4 CPUs are about the same now (www.pricewatch.com), but I'm not so sure on prices of motherboards =P (www.tomshardware.com for the best hardware and reviews). Intel hardware in general runs more cooler and therefore more stable and the AMDs.

If you multitask a lot or use programs written to take advantage of two CPUs take a look at getting dual CPUs (AMD dual CPU motherboards are probably cheaper than Intels but its still a $50-100 increase over the regular AMD motherboards).

I guess if you're working with big sound-files a faster hard-drive could help, but personally I don't think it would make too much of a difference.

I'll refrain from arguing the AMD side again and just say let's get back on topic, people! :P

Good points all around.

ok...Pylos Mining Corp..that's my little thing...and i spelt it wrong, so don't blame Morpheus...haha. i have the corrected version, so i'll post that up right after.

thanks Nix, I'll get right on that :)

By the way I'm still looking for voice overs for anyone who is interested. Just read it straight off the promo and match the words to when they appear on the movie. Thanks Everyone.
