Fate of Io
v5 Final
Posted by Temporal at 2005/04/09 17:30:53 PDT

If you are reading this, you are connected to the new fateofio.org server.

This server is a Pentium 4 3.0GHz with HyperThreading. The server has 1GB of RAM and 120GB hard drive space. It is running FreeBSD 5.3. Our monthly bandwidth allowance is an astronomical 1.5TB.

The web server is, of course, EvlanServer + Io Community Manager. Other software running on the server include OpenSSH, qmail, tinydns, and stunnel.

Over the next few days we will be going through the site and making sure all the info is up to date. This includes finally fixing all those broken links, etc.

I fully intend to make Dev do most of this work. Since, you know, he can. Whereas I haven't been able to make him do much other work before now. :P

Oh yes. As mentioned previously, everything which occurred over the last month or so of v5 Crash Test Dummy (has it really been a whole month!?) is gone forever. If you registered a new account during that time, you will have to re-register.

As was fully my intention. I apologize in advance for filling up the activity tracker with the plethora of updates and revisions that I'll be doing, but hopefully the work will make the site more navigable and the content more clear, especially for newcomers. Thanks to everyone for putting up with our (re)construction phase ... and when I say "our," it's really more Temporal's, since he did practically everything to whip out another incarnation for the project. Kickass.

Okay, enough of my rambling. Time to get this train steaming forwards again.

It's been said that if I want to claim any points I should post here.

Anyway, why do I see a prompt to add a file if I hit enter after typing in the text field (to rate a submission)? If I click the vote button it works normally.
To duplicate: I click on the text field, type 85, and hit enter.

6 points: 3 for the first bug you found (can't remember what) and 3 for the topic ordering bug.

I don't know. I have rated many files that way and never saw any such prompt.

Actually, can you take a screenshot of said prompt and send it to me? (E-mail or IM works.)

Turns out it's an IE problem, and it's been there all along. This is why I wanted people to, you know, test things. -_-

Anyway, I've implemented a hack fix.

Authenticator suddenly forgot that fateofio.org is a valid host. I'm still trying to figure out why. I restarted it, but that means you all have to log in again. Bleh.

Added at 2005/04/12 22:38:40 PDT

OK, I found the problem. And... it's a low-level core Evlan bug that to properly fix would require exporting all the server data, restarting everything from scratch, and importing again. And as the exporter doesn't work very well I can't do this without a lot of extra work... or, of course, destroying everything posted over the last few days and starting over from v5 final. I was able to fix the bug in the one place that I know it manifests (in the authenticator)... but it could be present all over and I just don't know if it is or not. Arg.

one burning question....how the hell do you have 1.5TBs of bandwidth? That's like a t3 connection!

Divided over a month, that actually only comes to 414kB/s, which is not T3-class. Hell, my cable modem gets that much bandwidth.

In any case, that's just what my hosting provider was offering. So, there you go. And since the machine is hosted at a major network center, it's not particularly expensive for them to get that kind of bandwidth.

Oh yeah...I forgot to divide over a month. :p I'll be getting cable when I move to Myrtle Beach! I can't wait. I'm so sick of dial up. Maybe then I can finally get a page up with my music, and stuff. (I guess that means I'll have to learn to make a decent site! :D)
