I guess nobody actually cares for these drawings... I'll upload them if you want, but I'm getting sick of myself making these dumb mistakes.

Dell seems very hard to draw, it might be because flying animals who walk on four feet don't even exist so you can't base antareans off anything.. I think we should go for a more cartoonish look too.

It seems to me that most of our artists have based Antareans on dragons, for obvious reasons, but haven't taken them much further than that. Your submission here Stix is right in line with one of the previous submissions (see the archived links in the current task; the one I refer to is by an unknown contributor). Not a good or bad thing, but it goes to show how difficult coming up with a unique Antarean design in general might be. :P

Something more human?

Has wings....

But stands up right? Pointed ears? I'm thinking.

Actually, as per bahamut's statement... we could have them look like flying squirrels.. LOL.. why do they have to have scales? They can have fur to keeps them warmly.

Hmm. That's an interesting idea ... but I think we do want a degree of realism for Antarean physiology. It doesn't seem like Antareans would be able to gain much altitude with the web-like "wings" of a flying squirrel.

I say that with regard to their dwelling, which are the high towering spires of Antares. They'd need powerful wings to propel them above the clouds. Perhaps we could go for something more batty, but give them a doggish-looking head with an anthropomorphized face (a la Akio's solo thumbs-up sketch of Dell). Bats have fur, don't they?

Funny note: No vertebrate on Earth has both wings and arms, or wings and four legs. (Incidentally, this is one of those numerous gigantic pieces of evidence supporting evolution/common descent!) Antareans are going to have four limbs in addition to wings, right? Then, these wings would have to come from a completely different evolutionary path than common bird wings.

Another realism note: Wings need to be very large. The kind of wings you often see on mythical creatures like dragons, gryphons, etc. are not realistically large enough to support the animal to which they are attached. Now, perfect realism isn't necessary, and I'll be the first to toss realism out the window if it gets in the way of fun... but it might be interesting to do some concept drawings with realistically large wings.

hmm. I always thought that an Antarean flew with his wings, but also with some kind of latent Eumonetic energy...

It looks good (being a rough sketch and all). Personally I like the length of the wing, perhaps it could be the same length but have an overall larger surface area. As well, perhaps it could be connected to him above his shoulder joint? I feel that may have a nice look, and if the wings are large enough, perhaps in battle if he stands on his hind legs... or all four he could use his wings as some form of sheild, or protection? Perhaps give his wings add-ons or armour?

Another thing to note, don't forget, is that Dell loses these wings in Part IV. So I don't think we should attach too great a usefulness to them, apart from the obvious flying ability, since that'd really cut down (no pun intended) on his utility in later gameplay. We'll already be dealing with rebalancing the wingless Dell (I'm thinking he'll become a more powerful, versatile eumonetic character without wings). But I digress...

Visually, this means that his wingspan is probably quite large, so that when he loses them he's still the size of a medium-sized dog. In other words, making them too disproportionately large would effectively dwarf Delloran without wings. But I agree, that the wings should be a large, central feature of Antareans.

Another facet that we haven't really explored is the tail. Dell's bio has always listed his natural weapon as his tail, so perhaps Antareans have some sort of stinger or sharp edge along their tails.

Yeah, I forgot about that Part IV section. Perhaps dwarfing Dell without wings is what we may want? Kind of a new Dell, Visually very different, and emotionally as well. Either way, his tail is his weapon, and to have it spiked, I feel it should probably be shorter.

Okay. I'm starting to feel for this.
So he needs some kind of sharp tail, a weapon... a blade seems not as invasive, but a morning star type attachment would make him seem too evil..right??

It'd also make him look like a dinosaur without those wings.

The Spires - I actually wrote a pretty simple but non-finished story about a homeland like that. Except in my story, my dragons were evil - but that's not the point.

Somewhere I read along the lines of - if the wings were positioned near the shoulders of a dragon, it could not possibly hold its weight because the back end would end up sagging all the time. Positioned near the middle, this person said, the flying creature would be more abalance, and more capable of manuevering without seeming ungainly.

I always figured that the wings of an Antarean would wrap around the body and be almost like a cloak when not in use. Maybe there could be some sort of claws, or barbs where the joints would be that would claps together. This would be pretty spectacular then, when they unfurl them. I also figured that they would have a sort of whip like tail with spikes, or some sort of stinging aparatus like a jellyfish. (got stung by one once, it was horrible)

I'd like to avoid the idea that they shoot barbs or some sort of spikes. That's been done to death. I also figure that it would somewhat subtle in design so that it would'nt be readily obvious that they have any sort of nasty weapon on their tails unless they were wearing a tail weapon of some sort?
