If FoI goes into implementation as a 3D game, I'm for cartoon shading. Very much so. Don't wanna list all the reasons why, no one will listen to me right now anyway.

Cartoon shading = the new Zelda game-like and stuff?

I, honestly, think that's dumb. They made the game that way to get back to the Zelda games' cartoony and fun side, and for a game like this is would be radically out of place.

I would rather not have to use cartoon shading too,but think how much time it will save. it will cut down 1/3 of the work in making the game if we were to make it in 3D.

Which one is FoI more aimed at, making a game quickly or making a good game?

I think cartoon shading looks just fine if it's implemented right. The biggest problem with shading is that most companies dwel on the shading abilities of their game engine, so they use a very large dose of it when they shouldn't. Used moderatly, it looks great and can leave a very classy finish on a game.

I don't think we should be overly concerned with shading right though. I think we should still be focussing more on modeling and play mechanics first. I've heard that it's much easier to alter lighting than it is gameplay of a final product.

If we aren't going to use sprites what are we going to use instead?

I'm not too familair with this sort of thing so if I'm wrong with some of it just let me know and I'll yell and cus at the person that told me otherwise.

Zorba: I actually like the look of cartoon shading a lot. I think it would be better than so-called "photorealistic" shading. So, it isn't a question between speed and quality...

Clockwork: Cartoon shading does NOT mean silly-looking. Think anime. Anime can be very serious even though it's a cartoon.

Black Squall: I define "sprites" as flat (2D) images, as opposed to 3D models. Sometimes sprites are used in 3D rather than actual models (think Doom). I'm saying it would be better for us to use full 3D models rather than sprites.

I totally agree with temp. cartoon shading, from the games that i have played, look real cool and if it saves us some work and time, heck, why not?

and i dont know why people think that cartoon shading looks silly or childish....not unless we make them super deformed like in the early ff series.

We western types tend to think of cartoons in the Disney sense. Don't get me wrong I actually like some Disney movies. But we don't see cartoons as having that big epic dramatic quality. Anime can really rule, and I mean rule for telling a good story in highly stylized, and free form way. The possibilities are endless really. You can make a serious story with anime easier than you can make a live action one. (by far!) Anime is an awesome medium. I am not an avid anime watcher so I can't really site anything, but I've seen some screen shots from some classics, and damn. Good freakin' luck trying to do some of that stuff in live action. I've read some scripts too. Another major thumbs up. The scripts are not childish. (unless their meant to be) The only thing I can think of that brings that level of depth in America was the original Batman: The animated series. That show had major depth. It was understated though because American audiences just don't get the power of anime. That show had serious themes, and explored the psychology of it's characters pretty well. (but suffered from the need apeal to the age group that the studios, and public think cartoons are meant for)

Get my point? Animated movies are better for telling stories because there are no limits to the artist's imagination.

Temp closed off that opposing argument with the anime comment. Any DBZ fans out there? You guys know how emotional that show is, and the look doesn't make it any less powerful, right? I whole-heartedly agree with cartoon shading now. In fact...I'm getting kinda excited about it...but I just don't want it to look TOO cartoony, know what I mean? Not quite the extreme of upcoming Zelda, but still...implemented...yeah...shutting up ;)

Hey DBZ is actually towards the bottom of my list of emotional anime. Although I do enjoy the show. I was thinking more of Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop. (to mention ones that are shown are the cartoon network) There have some huge epics done that are awesome.

you guys gotta get past cartoon network animes, cus a lot of them simply suck (due to editing and bad dubbing). i only liked cowboy bebop, but thats cus i had the dvd's before they showed it on tv.
go rent some anime at ur local video store instead of counting on television to supply good anime.

but thats if ur actually interested.....

I know Nataku. I was using that as a general source of anime that can be seen by many. However sucky the editing and dubs.

Cowboy Bebop comes on dvds? WHERE!! Oh and how about Outlaw Star? I really liked that show in CN form. ( I would need subs since I can't understand japanese.) one reason I like that show is that it fits the setting and character types for an idea I had to make an anime music video montage using Metallica's "The Outlaw Torn" (GREAT SONG!!!! I like both versions, but I think the Symphony and Metallica [S&M] version is better)

well i think that any place that sells anime dvd's would have it, but maybe not...i got the box set, but that was pretty expensive (but worth it). yea u should think about getting the dvd cus it has the dub and the sub (but the extras arent so great).

the outlaw star dvd sets are harder to find in stores, but if u really want it, they have it on animenation

Okay, guys, we need to get back on track. Cartoon shading or no, that is less important than deciding how the game is going to be set up.

Any way we look at it, the game is going to be in 3D, meaning they will not only have to work in north, South, East, and West, but up and down as well. At least, that's what I understand.

I'm suggesting a format sort of like that used in Kingdom Hearts. Others have supported a Warcraft/Starcraft/Baldur's Gate-like format, but I think that that format is 2D (with 3D graphics), although the game calls for 3D gameplay (cartoon shading/sprite/whatever).

Also, for separation of the group, the player should be allowed to divvy up the party into whatever groups, set the other on AI, or... even better! The player could control one set of characters, while the other remains "motionless"; then, after a set period of time perhaps, the player switchges to his other party. As the player controls the second party, what he did with the first party is going into effect... complex, but what the hell, it was a raw idea.
