[story] Revise Part II

It's true: all of Part II needs to be revised. Much earlier in the history of the project, we simply passed around a document containing contributor commentary with regard to possible changes and unclear plot points. Summaries of that commentary can be found for Chapter Eight, Chapter Nine, Chapter Ten, Chapter Eleven, and Chapter Twelve. It is highly recommended that you review these discussions, the entirety of Part II (if not the whole story), and the relevant character bios before you make further comments and/or suggest changes in this thread.

A significant portion of the outline for Part II needs to be rewritten to reflect the changes that have been discussed. A contributor who rewrites a section by integrating together decisions made here and elsewhere (see above) will likely earn more points than one who rewrites a section on their own. A contributor who submits completely new material without first discussing it might receive no points at all (i.e. if the material isn't fitting). Also note that even well-written rewrites may not necessarily be put into Part II.

Having said all that, I know this task seems daunting but don't let it intimidate you, even if you're new to the project (the plot could certainly use a fresh read, in fact). If you're having trouble figuring out where to start, by advice is to pick a chapter or section that interests you and focus discussion on that. And remember that since this is an official task, even simple good points about Part II are worth more than simple good points made elsewhere.

Just to re-iterate that last part: Simply discussing Part II and contributing some ideas, without actually going and rewriting stuff yourself, can still earn you points. Don't attempt to do your own rewrite if you aren't completely comfortable with the plot.

Instead of the battle of Tarikun being revealed to Ko all at once, what can happen is, he is told a rather brief and reluctant (subconciously guilt ridden?) version. And as Ko and Brooke go through puzzles to get out of the caves, they find bits of artifacts from the battle and Brooke ends up telling Ko more and more about the battle until he gets the full picture, and with each little bit, there can be a short flashback to the battle.

I like that idea, especially since we don't have much action occuring during that section between Tarikun and the labyrinth. If we turn it into a game (i.e. "get to the next artifact"), then hopefully the player will be motivated to continue, then be rewarded with more details of the war. We should be careful with putting two puzzle-intensive sections right next to each other, perhaps (their underground journey, then the labyrinth in the next few sections). Alternatively, we could integrate the storytelling with Brooke's trials in the labyrinth.

I'm not sure that Brooke would be guilt-ridden exactly, though the Battle of Tarikun in particular would be a sensitive subject to Proteans (and Antareans), so making her more hesitant about it is realistic. Also note that since that battle occurred 15 years prior to the game, Brooke was just a baby at the time, so she definitely wasn't present at Tarikun then. Flashback sequences might lead players to infer that she somehow was.

^^ Thank you. And about flashbacks, I didn't mean personal flashbacks, but historical ones. Like over all shots of some fighting scenes.

I also had an idea for a possible mini-game where Skunk Ko is spotted by some guy who runs a skunk/rodent race/maze thing and trys to get Rush to enter Ko in it.

Well I was pretty sure the whole entering whats-his-name's lair as Ko would be maze enough, what with avoiding guards (some blocking hallways that you can't go in until you're with Rush, who will be alerted if you get too close and walk into their line of sight) and finding the right halls and stuff.

For the record, I am against "mini-games". People who want to play games with entirely different gameplay should be playing different games altogether. Those that don't shouldn't be forced to play through half-assed "mini" versions of them. Let's focus on making our core gameplay better rather than thinking about mini-games.
