[11:48:41] Temporal: it means that the content of the page changes each time you view it
[11:48:52] mystik3eb: Oh, right
[11:49:02] Temporal: which means the page needs to be re-downloaded each time you view it
[11:49:14] mystik3eb: Now I get how caching works, it saves pages that don't change, right?
[11:49:21] Temporal: yep
[11:49:23] mystik3eb: Meaning pages with random banners and stuff...
[11:49:32] mystik3eb: Or counters
[11:49:33] Captain Vimes: So it conserves bandwidth, I believe. And off-line usages.
[11:49:37] Temporal: there's two mechanisms I use for caching
[11:50:13] Temporal: for some pages, when you request the page, your browser will say "I have a version with such and such tag on it. Is this the most recent?"
[11:50:27] Temporal: and if it is, the server will say so and not send a new copy
[11:50:47] Temporal: the other way is, with some stuff that never changes, the server actually says "Don't bother downloading this again for 1 day"
[11:50:57] Temporal: then your browser won't even ask
[11:51:20] Temporal: like, the picture of the faces
[11:52:08] mystik3eb: What do you do to the page to change that?
[11:52:16] mystik3eb: Like when coding the page?
[11:52:50] Temporal: it's not part of the HTML of the page. It's something the server tells the browser as part of HTTP.
[11:53:01] Temporal: Since I wrote my own server I can control all that
[11:53:08] mystik3eb: So the server determines that
[11:53:13] Temporal: basically
[11:53:18] mystik3eb: Meaning my free-hosted webpages don't give me that option
[11:53:24] mystik3eb: And will always reload everything again
[11:53:24] Temporal: probably not
[11:53:25] mystik3eb: ?
[11:53:30] Temporal: well
[11:53:43] Temporal: your free-hosted pages probably do the first type of caching, but not the second
[11:53:57] Temporal: so, if someone visits your page twice, the second time their browser will ask if the page changed
[11:54:07] mystik3eb: Can your server say to not ask again for more than 1 day?
[11:54:25] Temporal: yes, I can set any time period I want
[11:54:35] mystik3eb: Can you set it to never ask again?
[11:54:48] Kass joined.
[11:54:51] Temporal: the HTTP protocol spec says not to to use more than a year
[11:55:07] Captain Vimes: 4 people? It's a regular party!
[11:55:11] mystik3eb: ^_^
[11:55:13] Captain Vimes rolls (1-5000): 2958
[11:55:19] mystik3eb rolls (1-5000): 1003
[11:55:21] mystik3eb: DOH
[11:55:51] mystik3eb: So do you have some things on the site set for a year, then?
[11:55:52] Temporal: 5000-side dice... how do you make them stop rolling?
[11:55:58] mystik3eb: Big die
[11:56:00] mystik3eb: *shrug*
[11:56:08] Kass rolls (1-2): 1
[11:56:10] Kass rolls (1-20): 6
[11:56:11] Kass rolls (1-20): 15
[11:56:24] Temporal: I generally don't use expirations over 1 day
[11:56:58] mystik3eb: But the banner up top...?
[11:57:06] Temporal: it's all set to 1 day
[11:57:08] mystik3eb: Whatcha rolling for, Kass?
[11:57:18] Kass: Nothing in particular.
[11:57:18] mystik3eb: Oh ok
[11:57:24] Temporal: incase I actually, you know, want to change something
[11:57:28] Kass: Typical to have to roll two 20-sided dice.
[11:57:35] mystik3eb: Is it a pain in the butt to change that setting?
[11:57:44] mystik3eb: In D&D, you mean?
[11:57:49] Temporal: no, I can change it all very easily
[11:58:05] Temporal: but if I set the expiration to 1 year, then you download it, you will have it for 1 year
[11:58:08] Kass: Y... I dunno. I guess in D&D too.
[11:58:11] Temporal: and I can't change the copy on your system
[11:58:22] mystik3eb: Oh that's right...I get it
[11:58:40] Captain Vimes: I don't think so. I've read around in D&D guidebooks, though it might have changed.
[11:58:53] mystik3eb: I don't think I've ever touched a D*D book
[11:58:53] Temporal: usually 1d20 in D&D
[11:59:10] Kass: Right. I guess 2d20 is only on AOL.
[11:59:16] mystik3eb: Hero's Quest is the closest thing I've played
[11:59:32] Temporal: AOL's system is really boring. :P
[11:59:39] Temporal: But I guess they had to make it fair. :P
[11:59:39] Kass: I feel lame. I'm playing Uru and I think it's making me motion sick, because I have a surprisingly powerful headache at the moment.
[11:59:45] Kass: What do you mean, boring? :P
[11:59:50] Kass: What do you know about it? :P
[11:59:57] Captain Vimes: I'm surprised at the lack of commands in it mostly. For chats anyhoo.
[11:59:58] Temporal: I used it once
[12:00:17] Temporal: I had a friend who was into RP'ing back in junior high. Actually, I still have that friend... comes to LAN parties and such
[12:00:34] Temporal: he tried to get me into it but it didn't stick
[12:00:38] Kass: And... he RPed on AOL? With dueling?
[12:00:41] Temporal: that's why I use :: notation and such, though
[12:00:41] Temporal: yes
[12:00:58] mystik3eb: Temp I think you'd like the ctrl-alt-del comics
[12:01:01] Kass: Huh. ::shrugs:: All righty.
[12:01:17] Temporal: I've read some of that comic a long time ago, but didn't stick to it
[12:01:40] mystik3eb: I'm not even as hardcore a gamer and I still relate to much of it
[12:02:06] Temporal: I already read plenty of nerd comics. :P
[12:02:14] mystik3eb: I liked Sonic comics
[12:02:19] Temporal: Sluggy, PA, 8BT, PvP
[12:02:26] mystik3eb: Nuklear Power is classic
[12:02:35] Captain Vimes: Yup.
[12:02:38] Temporal: heh
[12:02:44] Kass: Mmph.
[12:02:53] mystik3eb: No?
[12:03:13] Kass: Err... no, I'm not disagreeing. Just... uh. Yeah. :P
[12:03:19] Kass: I read 8-bit too. ::shrug::
[12:03:22] Temporal: I met Vimes while working on Brian's Project: Video Game, you know. :P
[12:03:38] mystik3eb: I didn't know you worked with Brian
[12:03:39] Captain Vimes: It's dead now, no need to ask if it's fine or not.
[12:03:49] Captain Vimes: Well, dormant at least.
[12:03:59] mystik3eb: So that's what you were working on before this, Vimes
[12:04:01] Temporal: yeah, I did. But, yeah, the project didn't pan out.
[12:04:03] Kass: Are you guys still doing 2dgp or whatever it is? :P
[12:04:12] Captain Vimes: Um. Sort of.
[12:04:20] Temporal: they will be once I set up a new site for them
[12:04:44] Kass: That reminds me.
