Over the centuries of its existence, the underground kingdom of Protea has grown into an immense network of chambers and tunnels that extent nearly the entire distance of the continent. Only relatively recently (about fifteen years prior to gameplay) has the Protean civilization suffered drastically as a result of the war. Protean society has consolidated itself to the main capital chamber wherein lies the grand palace.

Because of the war, access from chamber to chamber in the Protean realm is heavily guarded. Normally, thick gates cover the openings to the tunnels, thus an invasion in any one part of the kingdom could be contained. There are only a few known gates that open to the surface.

It is a mystery to "surface dwellers" (as Proteans would call them) how the underground civilization can remain cut off from the light and air of the upper world.
