RSS - Live Feeds

I would like to suggest inclusion of live feeds for the next version of Project Manager.

For those of you that don't know what it is (I didn't until half an hour ago) you can read a little about it here

Basically, it's a kind of news link in Firefox's bookmark menus that automatically updates with news items, such as slashdot and BBC's website.

It has something to do with the RSS icon on the bottom of the pages.

As far as I know, I click the 'RSS' logo in my Firefox's window in the status bar and it adds it to my browser.

I'm not sure what part of the site would be used for this... The main page? All new topics? New replies?

Well whatever it would show...I just wanted to suggest it's use. Sorry that I can't be more specific on what it is about.

Seems redundent, especially since most people don't use Firefox...unless it's not browser-specific. Also, I thought I heard that a newsletter will be available once the new site is loaded, so that takes care of that I suppose. I wouldn't mind that idea at all, though, personally. However, I'm not programming the website =)

RSS is an open standard, not Firefox-specific. However, you should be using Firefox anyway, for oh so many reasons. The new site will likely have a few Firefox-only features.

RSS and the newsletter are completely unrelated ideas.

Anyway, I don't think RSS would be appropriate for a forum-oriented site like this. It's really intended for linear news feeds, so that you can be alerted each time there is an "update". Would you really want to be alerted every time someone posts on the site? Probably not.

I'm not entirely sure how RSS feeds are distributed, but if they involve the client repeatedly connecting to the site to "check for updates", that'd be another reason not to use them, as it would be rather inefficient. And if they don't work that way... well, then implementing them will be complicated and probably not worth the effort.

So. Probably not. But I'll look into it anyway.

Yes, I love Firefox, I find it great for everything...PC-wise, anyway. Safari is so far the best browser I've seen anywhere...another great thing I like about Macs. But as far as PCs are concerned, I've enjoyed my experience with Firefox.

But as far as RSS goes, it'd be cool, but again I think having that many reminders would be pointless.

Question, Temp: willing to spill any future Firefox-only features? =)

Firefox users will probably have the ability to choose among multiple "themes" -- basically, different stylesheets -- as Firefox provides a way to do this in the UI while IE does not. Also, I may do a Javascript-based chat room thing, and there's a chance it will be Firefox-only since I'm not sure if both browsers provide the features I need in the same way, and I may not want to write the whole thing twice. We'll see.

Whoa wait a sec. Temp you seem to be forgetting that the additions to the forum system isn't just FoI specific. I understand you wrote this site for FoI with intent of distribution in the future.

So maybe in the future somebody may find great use in these live feeds? I understand the uselessness of them in this 'forum' but say for the main page? or for the art junkies - just for new replies/topics in the Illustration top node?

I was suggesting the implementation for the whole Project Manager application...not just FoI.org ;)

But then...it was only a suggestion! I for one would be definately interested in new topics for 'The Project' node. I would like to maybe see the changes with new topics AS WELL AS new replies (see what I'm getting at here - options!! =D )

Lots of potential methinks. If it was php we're using here I'd volunteer and do it all for ya!

The site I'm currently working on won't have any use for this but I may start ANOTHER site on computer game series (Tomb Raider, *** Strike, Oddworld, Grand Theft Auto, etc) and have RSS implemented.

Wow isn't php great :D

Hey, something I could comment about. How about that.

I think, typically, RSS feeds aren't "distributed". Sites will just have files sitting on their servers that other people/programs can subscribe to and then display appropriately. So whenever a person loads their RSS feeds page, the page goes and grabs the feed and displays the last few posts. Firefox would work the same way, I'd guess... just waits until the user says "I want to check my RSS feeds now", and then it goes to get them.

It's not so much a ... "alert me when there's new stuff" thing as much as it's a "put all the stuff in one spot for me to read" thing. :P

Davy: I don't think other users of the project management software would be any different. Other projects would likely be organized the same way. And regardless, I don't have time to implement every feature that someone might want. I will only be implementing those that FoI will use.

Kass: I have heard people talk about RSS as a way to get "live updates" in the past. ::shrug:: In any case, from what I can see of the Firefox feature, I would guess that it refreshes itself regularly, and the idea of lots of people's browsers hitting our site all the time makes me uncomfortable. We'll see.

davy has a point in a way.

Having this Feed to update whenever a new image is submitted (only in the actual image part rather than everywhere), and the top nodes of the other main nodes, could be a good feature, just my pov.
