Themes from "The Three Spirits"

I was writing this for my orchestration class. It's from a string quartet that I wrote, but after I arranged it for a larger ensemble, it turned out better than I thought. The piece is supposed to be different movements, but this file gives a little taste to the sounds of all three.

Hey, nix, welcome back! As you can see things have changed a bit around here. We're planning a "re-launch" soon, so check back for updates.

Man, I wish my MIDI didn't suck. It'd be nice if you could submit an mp3 of the way you intend this to sound. (Of course, it's good to submit the MIDI as well.) Even with my crappy MIDI it sounds like an interesting piece. As usual I'll let Dev do the in-depth reviews.

However, I should note that according to the new rules, if you want points for this you need to tell us where and how it fits into the game. You don't have to do this, but you won't get points otherwise (unless, of course, we end up finding a place in the game for it, but that might be a long way away).

Good to see ya, nix. Like Temp noted, our new policies only reward submissions that are tailored for the game. So while I could come up with lots of things to say for this piece, I'll normally do that within the context of where this would fit in the game.

That said, the orchestration skills you must be learning in that class are evident here, and it's a significant improvement over the simpler arrangements you've submitted before. I don't know what the assignment was, but even if these are just samples from larger works, I like the way they mix and add variety to an otherwise floaty pattern of nice strings (which on my soundcard, sound awesome). My main kvetch is that the themes seem to have been added as afterthoughts to fit the underlying chord structures; I know that's probably not what you're focusing on for that class, but my recommendation for further submissions--especially those aimed for a current task--is to spend more time with a theme, giving melody more development and then add supporting parts.

Of course, that tends to be my style. Either way, this is good stuff, and it's nice to see more music coming in.

Hey, thanks for the quick feedback. Well, thanks for the comments..they're much appreciated.

As far as the placement and use of the piece, somewhere desolate and hopeless? Maybe when the party is on Mount Nimbus....or it can play during a possible video sequence...the best would that this would fit in would be the part where Kydran is first seen coming back to life while fighting the party and Aequus (Part IV, The Deadly Miracle).

Well I like it. I'd agree that it would fit where Kydran is first seen coming back to life. I especially love the final chord. The chord progression just...works great. I'd love to hear this without the awful midi sound, but eh. I like it either way.

Isn't it interesting that once I lose internet access, suddenly all these people start posting? o_O
