I'm not sure where this came from (other than my head...), but with the driving percussive pattern and the flighty melody on horns, I'm submitting this to be "Eastern Wake" music. Specifically, this music is meant to underscore the naval battle that occurs during Chapter 18.

I think it fits the battle well, or even just being on the Epsilon. I like it.

Two notes. One... there's no apparent climax. I realize it's looping, but with those drums, it feels like it's supposed to be leading somewhere. If this is going to be *just* the naval battle, I suppose it doesn't matter, because the big dramatic ending is in the fight with Tyrus and not the naval battle itself. Still, just noting.

The other thing is that, again, with that drum beat (which borders on irritating if I listen to it too long), I find myself wishing that you'd do something different with the trumpets, rather than just reiterating the drum pattern. Not sure *what*... just something.

Other than that... a nice, strong thematic line... quirky, catchy, etc. Good harmony lines to go with it. I like the slower parts, with the piano arpeggios... they break up the piece nicely (and get me away from the beat. blah.)

I have to agree that the drums are kind of annoying. In general this piece isn't really doing it for me. It's certainly not bad, but... yeah. At a couple places it sounds like it's about to get good, then it goes back to the annoying drums again. Never really goes anywhere. ::shrug::

the drumline sounds almost identical to the one in the Redwings Theme from FF4. I like the slower parts and that section around 2:30 is quite nice. I think you could use strings or something to get that more frantic mode. Dark ominous strings kick ass! (my midi synth sucks ass right now I lost my copy of the FoI soundfont, anyone got it anywhere?)

Aetrus: We aren't distributing the FoIfont anymore because I question its legality. The samples had to come from somewhere and Xeno never told me where.

You'd be surprised how much of that sort of thing is public domain, but I can see why you'd want to know.

It was a collection of soundfonts which were all collected from sites like www.hammersound.net. As Aetrus said, it's all public domain. Though, I have no idea where the samples are originally from, so it's better not to distribute it. I remember seeing some sonic implants drums distributed as free on some soundfont site, and still, sonic implants are selling the very same samples on their website...

btw. I want to change my username. Temporal, is that possible or do I need to re-register?

Not possible. You need to re-register. I'd recommend not doing so, as you'd lose your 20 past points.

You're the third person to ask me for a user name change since v5 went up. O.o

In fact, I'm going to request that you just live with your current username, if at all possible. Not only would you lose your points if you re-registered, but your new name would have an all-new activity history, which isn't good for people trying to look back at your previous contributions...

The alternating triple-duple is reminiscent of Star Wars and American Salute. It's good. The climax is at 2:53, if you ask me. The drumline sounds like it's from FF4 because the pattern is very similar, if not the same as, a military style cadence. I like it, but not enough to use it more than once in the game (but of course, it's only for one part of the game, so what's the deal?).

As far as the soundfont issue goes... free [good] soundfonts are very difficult to come by. That said, if you any of you know of a place I can get soundfonts, that would be awesome. My MIDI doesn't sound bad, I would just like to be able to actually engineer my MIDIs into nice MP3s (any online guide would also help a lot).

Come to think of it...
What happened to the thread with my most recent piece?

Check your profile, nix. You can see your own recent activity there, and at the moment your most recent piece is #3 on the list. Since it's been several days since you submitted it, the piece has moved from the "recently submitted" list to the ranked list, where it is on the second page. Hmm, maybe I should make stuff stay "recent" longer...

Not a problem. I haven't used this username anywhere in a looong time, though.

As tends to happen, this one has grown on me after listening to it a few times. I do still think it has some extended boring parts, but the good parts are... um... good.

Added at 2005/05/23 21:45:16 PDT

Specifically, I really like the part from 2:13 - 2:39. I think you should repeat this part immediately following 2:39, but with some variation, maybe add an instrument, and use more intensity. If you know what I mean.
