Fate of Io
v5 Beta 2
Posted by Temporal at 2005/02/19 06:08:47 PST

New features added:

  • Large speed increases gained from a couple small optimizations (yay for profiling!).

  • User profiles! You can now click on user links to see the person's profile. You can, of course, edit your own profile.

  • User rewards! Avatars, sigs, and post colors are implemented, and can be set by editing your profile. Note that in the future, these will only be available to people who have reached certain levels of influence. However, at this time, I'm letting everyone use them for testing purposes.

I should probably make it clear now that I expect to wipe everything posted during this beta once the final version goes up. So, we'll back up to just having all the v4 data at that time. I wasn't sure at first if this would be necessary, but it looks like it probably will be.

The good news is that this means you are free to post random silly trash posts to test stuff! :P

Bug: When editing your profile, post color saturation defaults to being equal to hue, rather than being whatever it was before. Fixed in source. For now, just make sure to double-check your post color each time you edit your profile.

Bug: Internet Explorer, crap that it is, displays sigs in black when it's supposed to display them in the same color as the post time. Urgh.

Okay. I have to admit the color selector is pretty cool, even though I'll never get to use it in reality. And placement of the avatar isn't bad... I hadn't a clue where you were gonna put it before.

All in all, nice work.

Woohoo. This does look quite good. I like the font sizes for the sig, as well. Keeps it nice and inobtrusive. But wait... you said "keep images small"... so now we ARE allowing images in the sig? :P

... and Kass, I just now realized what your avatar was. Heheh. -_-;

Added at 2005/02/19 15:52:45 PST

Oo! Oo! And is the [0] next to our user name influence? ... dammit, Kenton, why are you asleep! I could have sworn we were actually on the same schedule yesterday (ie, I woke up and saw your breakfast/shower message).

Just testing something. Does my avatar get in the way...

Added at 2005/02/19 15:54:11 PST

...when I do this?

Added at 2005/02/19 16:01:48 PST

Most impressive.

Another thought: How hard would it be to put something on the page itself that indicates where a person is in the tree? i.e. I was browsing through some old posts and suddenly realized I didn't remember what forum I was in; there was nothing on the page that told me. Obviously, about three seconds later I looked up at the address bar and figured it out that way, but a little The Game > Characters > Player Characters > Syne generated at the top might be nice. Not a big deal, just a thought.

Avatar appears to hide the corner of the quote box. But that doesn't matter much, I guess. I also like how the "reply" button will take all of the content in the post, without taking the "added at" mentions.

And no pics in sig. Pics must be under certain size to be permissible as avatar. Speaking of which, your avatar pic looks blurry, Dev. Or is it just me?

Oh yeah.

Yes.

This is the song that never ends. Yes it goes on and on my friend. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was. And they'll continue singing it forever just because this is the song that never ends. Yes it goes on and on my friend. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was. And they'll continue singing it forever just because this is the song that never ends.

Just want to see what happens with the blockquote text + avatar...

Ah. The beauty of CSS.

... yeenh. It was never very good. That was the version of the rez symbol that I'd painstakingly edited out of Gilgath's original artwork. Since then, I've created my own AEL components and made a clean version of the symbol, so we'll probably use that for the site. In fact... now would probably be a good time to get that together. :P

YOUR pic's blurry? I'm having the worst time getting mine to look good. I'll get it soon, though.

I love how this is working out. Just a thought, whether it helps or not: when uploading a picture that's too large, does it have to go to a new page, or can't it just reload the profile edit page with that indication on it? Whichever is more efficient, just thought I'd bring it up.

And...what IS your Avatar, Kass? I keep thinking the FF movie or Chrono Cross, but...I can't tell. Is it something from FoI? Or Warcraft? Haha.

Anyway, I'm excited for this site.

Because I was bored... I made you a new avatar, mystik. -_-; http://kass.pixel-rain.net:8080/dumpbox/ff9garnet.gif

And my avatar is from World of Warcraft, funnily enough... o_O ... it's a snapshot Dev took, when you're dead. Heh.

Please explain why justification is better for forum postings. PLEASE.

Your problem is that you are using a 59x59 picture when it needs to be 64x64.0 Kass's version of your avatar should work.

Ehhhh... Not really, no. Due to the way the system is designed it would be difficult to do that cleanly.

Because non-justified text looks damned ugly to me. You could have put your link on a separate line.

Added at 2005/02/19 22:10:21 PST

Oh yeah... Yes, images (and all other forum code tags) are allowed in sigs. However, I want them to be kept very small. Like, no more than two (normal-height) lines of text.

Josie reports that, under certain circumstances (namely, clicking on a button to edit her profile or to start a new post, then clicking on a sidebar link from the edit form), she gets a 400 Bad Request page. Anyone else seen this? If you see it, please copy the text and post it. It looks like a bug in IE.

Added at 2005/02/19 23:31:01 PST

Josie's problem has been fixed. Seems to have been a bug in her version of IE that mine doesn't have (she hasn't installed SP2; not sure if that's the only difference). Anyway, I worked around it. Of course, if anyone else sees any 400 Bad Request messages in the future, or any other error messages that don't make sense, please do copy/paste the text to me!

I personally have always liked Justified much much better. *shrug*

Uh... you mean, the link doesn't work? ::clicks on it herself:: ... if ... you say so? Here, I'll upload it somewhere else for you. One of 'em ought to work.
