I just wanted to post an early warning that sometime within the next few months we will be switching servers. This will likely be at least a month away, and it probably won't cause more than a few hours' actual interruption when it happens...
Our host of the last year and a half has been a friend of a friend of a friend of mine who happenned to work at an ISP at one point and had a colocated server there. He was interested in our project and let us have some space on his server free of charge. This has worked out great for us, mainly in that it's free, but also because I have been able to configure the server to my liking, installing things like Python and Apache Tomcat (for jsp/servlet support).
Unfortunately, for several reasons, Asicath is planning on taking the server down in the not-so-distant future (a few months from now). Being that we've never paid a cent for it, I certainly can't complain, but we'll have to find a new home.
Fate of Io doesn't use all that much bandwith (perhaps 500 megabytes a month). So, my current plan is to obtain a business-class cable or DSL line and run the site off of it. This might cost around $100 a month... but, as I see it, I'll have a paying job in a few months when I graduate, and should be able to afford this. Plus, I have a few things of my own I'd like to host. The best part is, I will have completely control over the software and hardware involved.
Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know what's up. If Fate of Io mysteriously disappears at some point (I don't think it will, but just in case), just be patient. It should be back within a few days. More news will be posted here when it happens.
