While we want to make the world of Fate of Io rich in detail and believable, it is merely a static background if there is no narrative or path to lead us through it. Our characters provide this path; we follow their stories, and this section is an introduction to the most important of these. The characters are divided into two groups:

Player characters are those that are controlled by the player during the game, and usually serve as the protagonists in the story (but not always). There are eight player characters, only four of which can be in the playable party at any given time.

Non-player characters are those that aren't controlled by the player during the game, and this section includes the most important NPCs (i.e. those that have some important relation to the player characters) as well as antagonists.
