New features added:

  • Large speed increases gained from a couple small optimizations (yay for profiling!).

  • User profiles! You can now click on user links to see the person's profile. You can, of course, edit your own profile.

  • User rewards! Avatars, sigs, and post colors are implemented, and can be set by editing your profile. Note that in the future, these will only be available to people who have reached certain levels of influence. However, at this time, I'm letting everyone use them for testing purposes.

I should probably make it clear now that I expect to wipe everything posted during this beta once the final version goes up. So, we'll back up to just having all the v4 data at that time. I wasn't sure at first if this would be necessary, but it looks like it probably will be.

The good news is that this means you are free to post random silly trash posts to test stuff! :P

As you can see, the site has been updated! Finally!

This is version 5.0 beta 1 of the Fate of Io web site. It is running on Io Community Manager, a web application written in my new programming language, Evlan. That's right: I wrote the software powering this site all the way down to the programming language virtual machine.

This site is BETA. There will most likely be many bugs, crashes, etc. to come, so please bear with me. I chose to put the site up in this incomplete form in order to facilitate testing. The more people viewing this site, the faster I will find problems with it.

This site is INCOMPLETE. There are many features I have not yet implemented, not the least of which are file submissions and chat rooms. These features will be added over the next week or so. For more thorough lists of current features, future features, and known bugs, read on...

It has come to my attention that a number of web sites (like, 50 of them, at least) have been stealing images from Fate of Io for display on their own sites. In particular, this image, by Gilgath, is very popular. Most of the offenders were weblogs. Some claimed to have created the image themselves. Others simply displayed the image to go along with some text. In all cases, they embedded the image by URL, meaning that fateofio.org's server was footing their bandwidth bill.

That is all.

We've finally arranged our older submissions into a useful hierarchy and added links to each respective node. If you like, you can browse all of the archived submissions by starting from http://www.fateofio.org/old2/.

URL changed because crazy people were using Google image searches to find our images and embed them in their web pages, stealing our bandwidth. New URL is not searchable.

Hi all! We'll be having our regular meeting this week (still at 4:00 pm Pacific/6 Central "Forum" time/7 Eastern/12 am (midnight) UK). Recently-joined team members are encouraged to come; we can spend some time going over just how the Project works, and answering questions you might have. If you're around at that time, pop on into AIMer chat "Fate of Io" (invite yourself, or IM me (Dev VJ) or TemporalG for an invite).

The server will probably be down temporarily next Monday, the 27th of October, or possibly the day after that. I am moving the server from its current location at a friend's house over to a new location in my basement. Sadly, this means that the server's uptime -- currently at 210 days -- will be returned to zero.

UPDATE: The move is complete.

This Saturday--October 4, 2003--will be our first time to try out the new meeting time. Temp and I have settled on 4:00 pm Pacific/6 Central "Forum" time/7 Eastern/12 am (midnight) UK, in the usual "Fate of Io" AIMer chat.

It has become apparent that our current Friday meeting time doesn't work well for many people. We decided yesterday that we should try to hold future meetings on Saturdays, but we could not decide exactly what time. We want to find a time which works well both for people in the US/Canada and the UK, so ideally it will be no later than 6 central time (midnight UK). Everyone, please post below to indicate what times work for you, and what time zone you are in. Thanks.

It says: "Hey! Look out! The story section is on the move!"

Also, don't forget that tomorrow, Friday, September 19th at 3 pm Pacific, 6 pm Eastern, and 11 pm UK we'll be holding another weekly meeting in same ol' Fate of Io AIMer chat. Hope peoples can make it.
